Stress Reduction

Stress is not a modern day invention but it is more prevelent in this modern day than ever before. Life is running so fast for almost every one of us that finding ourselves overly stressed is not hard at all. Stress can create illness, is the basis of some chronic diseases, and at the very least deprives us of adequate sleep and offers us muscles that stay clenched when they should be at ease which can lead to aches, strains and sprains. Here are some quick tips on stress reduction:

1) Acknowledge your stress. Denying you are stressed does not ease it...only acknowledging it and doing something about it can.
2) Create a peaceful atmosphere in your home. This is the area where we should relax and if you can lower the volume of the t.v. or turn it off completely. Silence has a calming effect on overstressed senses. Gentle soft music is also a great aid.
3) Take time for yourself in something you enjoy each evening. It does not have to be an elaborate thing... a simple cup of decaf tea or coffee made just the way you like it can be enough to make yourself feel appreciated.
4) Stress reduction tapes/meditation tapes are wonderful and even if you do not have time to sit and listen playing them in the background will find your muscles releasing and relaxing.
5) Massage is excellant for stress reduction. If you can't afford a deep tissue massage regularly then see your time in the shower each day as a mini-massage. Visualize the water kneading your tired muscles and washing the stress away. The use of aromatherapy soaps and shampoos, showering by candlelight and soft music can aid this as well.
6) When you feel yourself becoming stressed, be it at work or home, take a break. Let that deadline wait another 10 minutes while you change scenery, position and/or mind set so as to approach the task in a new light.
7) Much stress is caused by poor planning and putting yourself into crisis mode of too much to do in too little time. Plan ahead and set schedules. Do not allow time to become your enemy. A little attention at the front of day to time will make time your friend for the rest of the day.
8) Employ some humor. Even when dealing with the most serious of subjects or tighest deadline, the effects of a chuckle or a smile is priceless in lowering the stress hormones and therefore overall body toll of stress. If nothing else, laugh at yourself for getting worked up into a stressed-out knot of compacted muscles!
9) When possible leave work at work. If you are stressed at home, leave home at home while you go out someplace else. Learn to let your burden down and assume it only when you must. No one needs to be a martyr for their work, even the stay-at-home mothers!
10) Choose your priorities. Is the job worth sacrificing the quality, and perhaps even the quantity, of your life? Would a clean house make you happier than a few more minutes with your kids enjoying and teaching them? Would your life be be any longer if you made President of the firm or if you let your stress go?
